World Cup in Winterberg/GER, our World Champ Simon Gegenheimer wins in front of his his closest rival Titouan Perrin-Ganier from France. The 33-year-old reigning world champion was crowned 2022 World Cup winner in the sprint.
Another heartbeat final in the XCE mountain bike World Cup. Felix Klausmann (GER/25), Titouan Perrin-Ganier (FRA/31) and Simon Gegenheimer (GER/33) showed a huge battle. And it was once again our World Champion Simon Gegenheimer who took the victory, for the fifth time this year. The 33-year-old German secured the overall World Cup victory for the 2022 mountain bike sprinters. "The overall World Cup is a very special award. It is not dependent on daily form, but reflects the performance of you and your team over the entire season. And we are number one, I am very proud of this success", said Simon. The success proves the strength of our reigning world champion. In the last the last 1,000 metres, he had several opportunities to take the lead, but he kept positioning himself in the slipstream. It was not until the last downhill that the German almost playfully took the first position. He then defended this position powerfully on the following climb and on the finishing straight. In the end it was a perfect demonstration of Simon's strength, tactically, as well as conditionally. He seems to be clearly the fastest mountain biker of the year.
However, he and his mountain bike racing team want to prove this once again at the World Championships in Barcelona on 2 October. Team manager Steffen Thum looks forward to the event in Spain: "I am very happy about our season. We have won seven World Cup victories this year with Marion and Simon. Simon and I have had our sights set on 2 October for the past eight weeks, and our training is fully focused on this. Yes, we want to be World Champions again. But I know that there is a long way between the start line and the finish line. The whole racing team is giving 100% and we will see what will be in Barcelona.”
Marion Fromberger becomes 2nd in the overall World Cup classification.
Marion Fromberger, by the way, was also at the World Cup final, this time as spectator and was cheering for Simon. The 21-year-old had two operations last week after her fall in Paris. For Fromberger, the 2022 season is over, unfortunately she will not be able to compete in Barcelona. However, thanks to her points lead in the World Cup final for a very strong season performance as second in the overall World Cup. "I am already very sad to end my season early with a cast on my arm and a leg splint, but I am very happy that I am feeling better again. I have won two World Cups, I am second in the World Ranking and in 2022 I have taken another step with a long-term view. Simon is the perfect role model and I know that you need stamina in pro cycling”, says Marion Fromberger.
