What a race. Yesterday there was a real spectacle at the World Championships in Graz, Austria. Simon Gegenheimer has won the world title in a breathtaking finale. An absolute amazing race. But first things first. The race started with a short individual time trial. The riders went out on the track individually and were able to create a promising starting position for the final heats. Here things weren't quite going well for Gegenheimer who "only" landed on the 8th place. However, this should not prove to be a major obstacle. Because in the quarter and semi-finals, Simon qualified for the final heat in a great manner. In the big final there was a great battle between Simon and his toughest competitor Jeron van Eck. The Dutchman van Eck led the final with a strong performance from the front for a long time. Simon lurked on his rear wheel for his chance. In the final corner, the German has choosen a risky line on his Revo Bow and pulled on the sprint. In the last few meters he passed van Eck and won the world title. A dream comestrue! After the race, Simon tried to put his success into words:
“I’m on a high”, 32-year-old Simon Gegenheimer smiled after the absolute highlight of his career. “I’ve won the overall UCI World Cup title, seven World Cup races and four UCI World Championship’s medals, but never the title. Right now, I’ve got my career completed. This was everything that I wanted, and now I have it! This venue was great. After every corner, there were lots of spectators shouting for all of us, not only the Austrian riders. It was so cool to be back in front of a crowd. Too bad, I wasn’t too fast in the qualifying time-trial, so I had to do the race from the back. Luckily, in the final, I’ve felt Jeroen slowing down in the climb. I had to ride the last corner clean and tight, to accelerate sooner and faster. And it worked out perfectly!”
Marion Fromberger becomes 4th!
In the women’s category, our German athlete Marion Fromberger was also always very well positioned and qualified for the final with an excellent performance. Here, however, the top Italian driver Gaia Tomena couldn't be beaten and Marion finished fourth at the end of the day. Another podium for corratec and the MTB racing team!
